WHAT IS CUSHING SYNDROME ?

Cushing syndrome is associated with high cortisol levels. Cortisol is a type of stress hormone the body uses to increase alertness, such as during a fight-or-flight response. Elevated cortisol levels are necessary at times. However, experiencing high cortisol levels for long periods can lead to other potential health issues, such as hyperglycemia, hypokalemia (low potassium levels), heart issues, and more. Cushing syndrome is a rare disorder that causes the body to produce too much cortisol over a long period. Cortisol, a type of stress hormone, helps the body with several processes trusted Source, including turning food into energy, regulating blood glucose (sugar) and blood pressure levels, and reducing inflammation.

When the body releases too much cortisol, hyperglycemia can develop. This happens because cortisol interferes with how insulin works.

Other complications associated with Cushing syndrome:

  • depression or other mood changes
  • heart attack and stroke
  • infections
  • blood clots in the legs and lungs
  • unhealthy cholesterol levels
  • type 2 diabetes
  • bone loss and fractures
  • memory loss or trouble concentrating
  • high blood pressure
  • insulin resistance and prediabetes

Write legibly for Logbooks audits.

Please list all activities/duties and interaction that occur during your shift. This is a part of your job duty as a caregiver and an agency requirement.
