LIVE-IN/24 Hours Care
At New Day Home Care our Live-In Caregivers provides 24-hour home care services that meets the specific health and personal needs of our clients. Our specially trained professionals provide LIVE-IN, 1-on-1 client centered home care service and assistance with Activities of Daily Living daily (ADL) tasks such as bathing feeding and toileting.
LIVE-IN care refers to care provided by a Caregiver who spends a 24-hour period with the client but can sleep during the night. Although the Caregiver’s sleep may need to be interrupted at night to assist with a possible bathroom visit or another need for the client, they are guaranteed adequate nightly sleep.
LIVE IN – What this means … you will be at the client’s house for 24/168/336 hrs. straight. (You do not actually live there and should not give client’s address as yours. You are provided with a separate sleeping quarter during your work shift.
The LIVE-IN services will be on a one week or two weeks duration before caregiver get Time-Off. The work period will be established at the start of the service agreement.
The LIVE-IN caregiver is not paid hourly but at a daily rate for their services established by the Home Care Agency
The LIVE-IN caregiver also provides hands-on personal care to assist the client with Activities of Daily living (ADL) and other household activities based on client needs. This may also include post-procedure care and exercises to support their return to wellness.
A customized Care Plan prepared by Case/Care Manager & client’s team of professionals to meet client’s specific personal and health-related need should be followed daily for the client’s daily welfare.

What to Bring/Supply
- The client’s family or conservator is responsible for providing the caregiver with a comfortable place to sleep. It is customary but not MANDATORY that towels, pillows, linens, and blankets are provided for the caregiver while working with the client, but the caregiver is welcome to bring their own linens as some clients & families are not able to provide the same.
- The caregiver should always bring his/her OWN clothes and toiletries that should last the entire length of the stay.
Workday
- One 24-hour period equals one day of service. The caregiver is expected to stay with the client during the entire 24 hours each day UNLESS there is a signed agreement by client and caregiver that allows caregiver to leave for short periods of time (to run errands for the client, do laundry, get mail, etc.)
- The caregiver is NOT expected to work all 24 hours of the day. Their main duties should be during your waking hours. There will be times during the day when you do not need anything, and this can be the caregiver’s time to relax.
- Caregivers should document the client care daily in the Agency Logbook provided.
Daily Breaks
- There is no set schedule for breaks. The caregiver should take breaks when client needs are met (personal care and household chores). The caregiver takes these breaks on the premises unless other arrangements are agreed upon.
- While the caregiver is on a break, there must be a way for the client to call the caregiver if he/she needs help.
- The caregiver should have two hours (2) of Break Time per day.
- These breaks are most often at home, for meals, bathing, etc. and is usually taken in half or one-hour increments during the day.
Medications
- The LIVE-IN caregiver by law, is not allowed to dispense medications. However, they can provide medication reminders based on a prefilled med box (filled by client, family member, registered nurse, or member of client’s clinician team) or blister packed medications prefilled by the pharmacy in bubble packs)
- No assessment for PRN meds can be done, thus scheduled meds are preferred.
- LIVE-IN caregiver can only provide “hand over hand” assistance to the client.
Night-time/Sleeping
- The caregiver should be able to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. The client may occasionally need to get up at night to use the toilet, and it is acceptable to expect the caregiver to assist the client when needed.
- On a regular basis, you should not have to wake your caregiver more than 1 or 2 times per night, for brief periods.
- While you are both sleeping, there should be a way to call your caregiver. We recommend baby monitors.
- Staff should not be in their bedroom during normal waking hours, while client and or family members are in common living areas.
- Staff should sleep when all individuals in the home are sleeping only.
Meals Food.
- Meals for the caregiver is usually provided by the client, their family or client’s conservator. The caregiver can eat from meals that is prepared for the client unless client has a restricted diet. Caregiver can make a separate meal
- If the caregiver requires food from a specialty store or has other dietary needs, they are responsible for providing their own food.
- There will be NO exchange of money regarding a daily food rate/cost
- Any changes to the meal arrangement for the caregiver should be established upon the start of care.
